Abstract

This study aimed to develop a play-based fundamental movement skills model using basic Pencak Silat movements that is feasible, practical, and potentially supports gross motor skill development among students in the early-age category. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The participants consisted of 10 Tapak Suci instructors in Gorontalo Province during the needs analysis stage and 30 students in the early-age category, ranging from 6 to 12 years of age, during the implementation stage. The product was developed through needs analysis, movement activity design, expert validation, revision, and limited implementation. Product validation involved three experts who assessed the Pencak Silat content, instructional aspects, and media and language components. Data were collected using a needs analysis questionnaire, expert validation sheets, implementation observation sheets, instructor response questionnaires, and a gross motor skill assessment instrument. The data were analyzed descriptively using percentage scores for validity and practicality and N-Gain to determine improvements in gross motor skills. The results showed that the developed model achieved a validity score of 91%, categorized as highly valid. The implementation rate reached 92.5%, while instructors’ responses to the practicality of the model reached 90%, indicating a highly practical model. Students’ gross motor skill scores increased from a mean pretest score of 58.4 to a posttest score of 82.1, with an N-Gain score of 0.57, indicating a moderate level of improvement. These findings provide preliminary evidence that the play-based fundamental movement skills model using basic Pencak Silat movements has the potential to serve as a structured, enjoyable, and contextual alternative for supporting gross motor skill development among students in the early-age category. However, because the implementation employed a one-group design without a control group, the effectiveness of the model should be further examined through experimental studies involving larger samples and comparison groups.
